Deed poll questions, answered honestly

How much does a deed poll cost?

With NameFix: £19.99 for a deed poll by email (PDF), or £24.99 printed and posted. Extra original copies are £5 each and the Name Change Kit is £9.99. For fairness: making your own deed poll is free — GOV.UK explains how — and solicitors typically charge £150 or more. You pay us for a correctly prepared document, a person checking it, and step-by-step help fixing every record afterwards.

How do I change my name by deed poll?

Four steps: (1) apply online with your current name and your new name; (2) we prepare your deed poll and cover letter; (3) you sign it in front of two adult witnesses; (4) you send it to the DVLA, Passport Office, your bank and others to update each record. The whole application takes about 5 minutes.

Is a deed poll from a private company legal?

Yes. A deed poll is not issued by the government and does not come from a court. It is a legal declaration that you sign in front of witnesses. Any suitably prepared document in the standard format is accepted by UK organisations. No company — including the biggest ones — has special legal powers. What matters is that the document is prepared correctly and executed (signed and witnessed) properly.

Will the DVLA and Passport Office accept it?

Yes — deed polls in the standard format are the normal evidence both accept for a name change. For the DVLA: sign your deed poll in front of two witnesses, then send three things together — your current licence, your signed deed poll, and a completed D1 form. The Passport Office requires all your documents to show one consistent name. If any UK organisation refuses your document, we refund you in full.

Who can be my witnesses?

Two adults (18+) who know you, are not related to you or your partner, do not live at your address, and are present when you sign. Friends, neighbours and colleagues are perfect. They sign and print their name, address and occupation.

How many copies should I order?

Some organisations ask for an original, not a photocopy. Every copy we send is a full original for you to sign and have witnessed. Most customers order 4–8 copies so they can update the DVLA, passport, banks and others without waiting for documents to come back.

Do I need to "enrol" my deed poll at court?

Almost certainly not. Enrolment at the Royal Courts of Justice is an optional extra that only a tiny number of people use. It is not required for the DVLA, Passport Office, banks or employers. We will not sell you extras you do not need.

How long does it take?

PDF orders placed before 3pm Monday to Friday are prepared, checked and emailed the same working day. Posted orders placed before 3pm are printed and sent the same working day by Royal Mail. After signing, updating each organisation takes as long as that organisation takes — the DVLA typically turns licences around in a few weeks.

I lost my deed poll — can I get another copy later?

Yes. We keep your order details on file, so you can order replacement originals from us at any time for £5 each plus postage — just contact us with your reference number. You will need to sign and have the replacement witnessed again, the same as the first copy. (Some companies charge £15+ for an "archive service" to do this. We don't.)

I have no surname at all. Can you still help?

Yes — this is exactly our speciality. Many passports leave the surname blank, and UK systems then store the name wrongly. Your deed poll sets out your first name and surname properly so every UK record can match.

Does a deed poll change my visa or immigration status?

No. It changes your name records only. You must also update your UKVI account/eVisa details with your new name. If you have an immigration problem beyond your name, you need a regulated immigration adviser — a deed poll service is not a substitute.

Can you change a child's name?

Not yet. Child deed polls need the consent of everyone with parental responsibility and the rules are stricter. We do not sell them until we can do them properly — please see a solicitor for child name changes.

What if I make a mistake on my application?

Tell us before you sign — we correct and re-issue free. This is why a person checks every document before it leaves us.
