Surname blank on your driving licence? Here is how to fix it

Look at your UK driving licence. Line 1 is your surname. Line 2 is your first names. If your full name is printed on line 1 and line 2 is empty, your name is recorded wrongly — and it will keep causing problems until you fix it properly.

Why does this happen?

UK forms demand a surname. Many passports from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other countries leave the surname blank, or put the whole name in the given-names box. When that meets a UK computer system, the system forces your full name into the surname box and leaves the first-name box empty. Nobody tells you — you only find out when something fails.

Why it matters

Banks, employers, insurers, the Passport Office and even LinkedIn identity checks compare your name across documents. When your licence says one thing and everything else says another, checks fail, accounts get opened in the wrong name, and applications get refused or delayed.

Please note — correcting your licence, in short: sign your deed poll in front of two witnesses, then post three things together to the DVLA: (1) your current driving licence, (2) your signed deed poll, and (3) a completed D1 form. The DVLA will send you a corrected licence — and changing your name on your licence is free.

The fix — 4 steps

1. Make a deed poll. A deed poll is a signed legal declaration that states your name properly — first name and surname split the way you want them. You do not need a solicitor or a court. Our service prepares the document for you, checked by a person.

2. Sign it with 2 witnesses. Both witnesses must be adults (18+), know you, not be relatives, and not live at your address. Sign with your old signature and your new signature, on the same day, in front of them.

3. Update the DVLA. Fill in form D1 (from the Post Office or the DVLA website) and send it with your deed poll and your current licence. Changing your name on your licence is free. Your licence number will change — it is built from your surname. That is normal and expected.

4. Update everything else, one by one. Passport Office, banks, HMRC, employer, GP, council, phone company. The Passport Office works on a strict rule: one name for all official purposes — every document must match, or they can refuse your passport.

Order matters: deed poll first, then DVLA and passport, then banks and the rest. Fix the source document first and the rest becomes simple.
