Your name is different on every document? Read this before it blocks you

Passport: one version. BRP or eVisa: another. Driving licence: a third. Bank account: a fourth. This is one of the most common problems for people who moved to the UK — and it usually explodes at the worst moment: a passport application, a new job's right-to-work check, or a bank freezing an account.

The rule that catches everyone

HM Passport Office follows a strict policy: one name for all official purposes. If the name on your passport application does not match your other passports and official documents, they will not issue the passport until everything is aligned. The Home Office applies the same thinking to citizenship applications. There is no arguing with it — the only way through is to make every document agree.

Why the names drifted apart

Different systems split names differently. A blank surname on your home-country passport becomes "full name in the surname box" in one system, your father's name appears as your surname in another, and a spelling gets typed slightly differently somewhere else. Each office copies from the last document it saw, so the errors multiply.

The fix — in the right order

1. Decide your one true name. Pick the first name and surname you will use for everything, forever. Every later step points at this name.

2. Make a deed poll in that name. The deed poll is the bridge document: it legally connects your old name (in all its versions) to your one true name, so every office can see they are the same person.

3. Fix the source documents. DVLA (form D1 + deed poll) and your UKVI account / eVisa details. If your foreign passport holds the wrong split, you may also need it re-issued by your own embassy with the name split correctly — the deed poll supports that application.

4. Then the everyday records. Banks (take an original deed poll into the branch), HMRC, employer, GP, council, utilities, phone. Keep one original deed poll safe at home — you will need it again over the years.

Important: a deed poll fixes your name records. It does not change your immigration status, and it is not a visa service. If you have a visa problem, you need a regulated immigration adviser — we will tell you that honestly rather than take your money.
